Stuart Epps, a renowned British record producer and audio engineer, has significantly influenced the music industry since 1967. His impressive portfolio includes collaborations with iconic artists such as Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Oasis, Twisted Sister, Nine Lies, Bill Wyman, Kiki Dee, George Harrison, Robbie Williams, Mark Owen, and Paul Weller.

Leadership in the Studio

Epps emphasizes the importance of leadership in music production. He believes that a producer should act as the “ship’s captain” during recording sessions, especially with bands. This role involves taking charge while maintaining diplomacy, skills honed over years of managing various artist temperaments. He notes that understanding psychology is crucial to elicit the best performances from artists. Interestingly, he points out that Elton John’s producer, Gus Dudgeon, couldn’t play a note, yet produced some of Elton’s finest albums.

Favorite Equipment

Among his cherished tools is a classic AKG C12 414 microphone from the early ’70s, originally part of the Rolling Stones’ mobile studio. Epps praises its warm sound, suitable for a range of vocals from soft female tones to Paul Rodgers’ rock style.

Journey with Elton John

Epps’ association with Elton John began in 1967 when he worked as an office boy for Dick James, the Beatles’ publisher. Witnessing Elton’s evolution from a budding singer-songwriter to a global superstar was a remarkable experience for Epps, one he aspires to replicate with new artists.

Insights on Led Zeppelin

Although Epps started working with Jimmy Page shortly before John Bonham’s passing, he contributed to mixing Led Zeppelin’s final album, “Coda.” He recalls the complexity of mixing Bonham’s drums, which involved 24 tracks featuring multiple drum kits, percussion instruments, and effects. Epps highlights the distinctive sound of Bonham’s bass drum, especially when processed through Jimmy Page’s Fairchild limiters.

Sustaining a Long-Lasting Career

Reflecting on his enduring career, Epps attributes his longevity to the diverse range of artists he’s collaborated with, spanning genres from pop to rock. He finds that contemporary musicians still value the music and sounds he’s been part of and often seek to recreate that vibe. His unwavering passion for producing and engineering continues to drive his work.

Current Endeavors

Currently, Epps is involved in various projects, including managing his own label, EPPS Record Company, which promotes artists he produces. He co-wrote and produced a new single with U.S. artist Skylar Roger and is working with 18-year-old talent Amber Mae, whose single is set to release soon.
