Secrets from Decades in the Studio – My Journey as a Producer

by | Mar 11, 2025

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the most legendary artists in the music industry. From early days in the studio to producing for icons, my journey has been filled with unforgettable experiences, lessons, and a deep passion for great music.

The Role of a Producer – More Than Just Sound

Producing music isn’t just about technical expertise—it’s about leadership, vision, and the ability to bring out the best in artists. A producer needs to be the captain of the ship, guiding sessions, balancing personalities, and maintaining the right creative atmosphere.

One of the best examples of this is Gus Dudgeon, who produced many of Elton John’s classic albums. He wasn’t a musician himself, but he had the ability to inspire incredible performances, proving that a great producer doesn’t always need to play an instrument—just the ability to hear what works.

My Go-To Studio Gear

One of my most prized pieces of equipment is my AKG C12 414 microphone, which I originally got from the Rolling Stones’ mobile studio in the early ’70s. Its warm, versatile sound has made it my go-to mic for a wide range of vocals, from soft and delicate performances to powerful rock voices like Paul Rodgers.

Working with Elton John – A Remarkable Journey

My connection with Elton John began in 1967 when I was just starting out as an office boy at Dick James Music. At the time, he was still an emerging songwriter, but I knew he had something special.

Over the years, I watched him rise to global superstardom, working alongside him as a close friend and collaborator. I even toured the U.S. with him and helped run the record company. It was an incredible journey, and I hope to continue discovering and working with artists who share that same magic.

Behind the Scenes with Led Zeppelin

My work with Led Zeppelin came later in their career when I joined Jimmy Page’s studio. While I didn’t record the band in their prime, I had the honor of mixing their final album, Coda.

One of the most memorable tracks was Bonzo’s Montreux, a powerhouse drum recording featuring up to 24 tracks of percussion. John Bonham’s bass drum technique was legendary—he left the front skin on, creating a booming sound that, when processed through Jimmy’s Fairchild limiters, became even more massive.

Keeping a Career Alive in the Ever-Changing Music Industry

One of the biggest reasons I’ve had a long career in music is my ability to adapt and my passion for working with new artists. Over the years, I’ve worked across various genres, from rock to pop, always keeping an ear out for what makes a great song stand the test of time.

Today, many young musicians want to recapture the energy of past eras, and I love helping them achieve that. The core elements of great music—passion, authenticity, and strong songwriting—never change.

Exciting New Projects

Right now, I’m involved in several exciting projects. I’ve started my own label, EPPS Records, to support and promote artists I produce. One of the latest projects is a single I co-wrote and produced for U.S. artist Skylar Rogers.

I’m also working with an incredible 18-year-old vocalist, Amber May, who has an amazing voice and a bright future. Helping new talent develop and reach their potential is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.

The journey continues, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
